National Geographic - Sicily Crypts
The haunting photos above are from the article about the Sicily Crypts in this month's National Geographic. The corpses were originally preserved by the cool and dry climate of the catacombs, later embalmers utilized chemicals to further the preservation.

SO interesting. Are these the catacombs where the families of the deceased would come and dress their dead relatives in modern clothing, updating their clothing every so often?

This is interesting...I also went and read about it from The National Geographic site - did you see the picture of the mummified 3 year old girl from the 1920's? It was remarkable.
