Sub-Studio Plus One!

We don't get personal much in this space, but we wanted to share some upcoming news with you - Sean and I are having a baby! We're having a little girl in early February and we are super excited to meet her. Nothing much will change on this blog, but if you are interested in design-y baby items, we will be posting our favorite finds and documenting our growing family over here.

A New Look

It is absolute insanity to think that we started this blog in September of 2006 and it is now Summer 2010! But since then, the blog has only had minor tweaks to the design. We decided we had to up our game and make our blog a little more grown-up. We hope you enjoy the new look and thank you for all your support over the last 4 years!

#OBJECTHUNT

I'm taking a page out of Notcot's book and am posting a few of the different #ObjectHunt photos that have been tweeted so far. It's been so fun seeing all the different photos come in as the stickers have been found.

Tomorrow (May 18th) is the last day to find the stickers and tweet them to #ObjectHunt for a chance to win two nights at the Standard LA, two tickets to Dwell on Design, and an Eero Aarnio puppy. Cool Hunting is also offering an iPad to another #ObjectHunt winner. We've been dropping location hints on twitter, and if you don't already know the rules, you can check them out here. Happy #objecthunt-ing!

#OBJECTHUNT

To add a little random fun to all of the Design Week festivities happening this week and next in NYC, the lovely Jean of Notcot orchestrated a citywide Twitter sticker scavenger hunt that we are calling #OBJECTHUNT. We got together with a few of our favorite design blogs - Notcot, Apartment Therapy, Design Milk, Moco Loco, The World’s Best Ever, Cool Hunting, and Design Glut - and The Standard hotel to spread out a bunch of stickers of iconic design objects/things that we covet around the city (mainly in areas where Design Week events are happening). If you spot a sticker, take a photo of it and tweet it with the hashtag #OBJECTHUNT, and you will be entered to win the Ultimate Design Getaway package courtesy of The Standard hotel, NOTCOT and Dwell which includes:
- Two Nights Stay at The Standard, Downtown LA in a "huge" guest room with daily breakfast for two.
- Two Home Tour tickets to Dwell on Design in LA, June 25-27; includes a weekend pass and a choice of a Eastside or Westside tour. Courtesy of Dwell on Design, a preeminent modern design show for the design trade on the West Coast.
- And a PUPPY! (Not a real puppy, silly!) An adorable classic Eero Aarnio designed toy puppy from the Magis 'Me too' children's collection, courtesy of NOTCOT.
Check out www.objecthunt.com for full details and the official rules. Keep your eyes peeled as you wander around the Design Week events and tweet your photos of the stickers to #OBJECTHUNT to be entered to win!

We'll all be dropping a few hints over the next few days on twitter and here as to where stickers might be...Hint #1: What NYC hotel has both an awesome beer garden and straddles the Highline? That might just be a good place to start...

It Takes Two Exhibition

We were super excited when Susan asked us to participate in the It Takes Two show at Artstream, which just opened over the weekend. The idea behind the show was to present couples making art - exploring the process of making art together in jointly created pieces or side by side works. Sean and I started our collaboration together years ago, with our visible:invisible series of prints, so it seemed appropriate to return to that process and to create some new works in the same vein. The above, 20:07:14 - 20:18:31, is one of our two illustrations for the show, featuring two whales navigating the forest of columns at St. John the Divine.

Some of our favorites from the show: Below, Shannon Rankin and Justin Richel (as far as I know, they haven't worked together before and I am really loving the outcome of their collaboration - it's a great mixing of their two styles together), and at the bottom, Julia Rothman and Mathew Longacre.

Aesa and Time Out New York

Brevity got a very nice feature in the current issue of Time Out New York in an article on four designers who share an obsession with nature. One of the other designers featured is Aesa, who works with rough stones. I fell in love with her work instantly. Check out more of her designs here.

We're hanging out at Design Milk today as part of their Friday Five series. We've highlighted five theoretical architecture projects/concepts that have influenced our design processes. Thanks, Jaime!

Gas Up The Hog, It's Christmas Eve!

It's Christmas eve! My family is coming into town today, so we will probably not be posting between now and new years. Thank you for reading and commenting over the last several years. We've loved hearing what you have to say! We hope that 2010 (wasn't it just y2k?!) brings you much happiness and many blessings. See you next year! - Anna and Sean

Gifted Holiday Market

Hi - quick post to apologize for the lack of posting today - Sean and I have a booth at the Brooklyn Flea's Gifted holiday market and we had to set up this morning which didn't leave much time for posting. We should be able to get back to regular posting tomorrow. Anyway, if you're in the east village today through Sunday - stop by and say hi! The market is located at 20 East 4th Street (at Lafayette). There are lots of great vendors participating and we are selling Sub-Studio, Brevity and The Working Proof goods! There's also apparently a "shopping party" every Wednesday (until 9pm) with a DJ and free Brooklyn Brew Shop beer.

Alright then. Until tomorrow.

The Strange Attractor Interview

Our friend Andrio Abero interviewed us for The Strange Attractor, an awesome art and design blog. It was a super fun interview to do - it was part of TSA's new column called Creative Couples, which is all about couples who work together. Check it out if you get a chance.

Brevity Jewelry - The Horo Collection

Finally - I'm excited to show you some of the pieces from my newly launched Horo collection of jewelry over at brevity....It's been a ten month process from design to launch, but better late than never, right? The Horo Collection is inspired clock parts - the fusing of the temporal into the permanent. There are ten designs, each based on a pair of clock hands, fixed in time. Each chain is customized with a delicate gear charm that links to the chain at the collarbone. The pendant styles span modern to classic looks by drawing from traditional forms combined with modern arrangements and fabrication techniques. The pendants come in stainless steel or in 24k gold-plated. See all of the designs here.

Halloween 2009

Sean and I were butter and corn this Halloween. For the first time in our six years in New York City, we walked in the Halloween Parade. It was pouring out so we got soaked (note to self - bring an umbrella next time), so this is one of two photos we have of our costumes - boo!

What did you do?

Old Maid Collaboration

Kathryn Hunter of Blackbird Letterpress asked us a few months ago to be a part of a collaboration she was putting together - a limited edition Old Maid letterpress deck! 33 artists were asked to design an Old Maid character. We decided on Greasy Grimes - drawn as a double portrait inspired by a standard face card. The two opposing sides of the card represent the inner and outer character of a single person in two different forms. What is more desirable, inner or outer beauty?

"Beauty is but skin deep, ugly lies the bone; Beauty dies and fades away, but ugly holds its own." - John Davies of Hereford.

Being that we don't letterpress ourselves, we paired up with Kseniya Thomas who did an awesome job printing our Greasy Grimes pair.

Below are some of our favorites from the collaboration:

Knitting Kneena - Katrina Andry.

Tattooed Tina - Bon Vivant Press.

Her Majesty Marie - F Street Letterpress.

Ethel Early Bird - Heroes & Criminals Press.

Lucia Libre la Luchadora - Flatbed Splendor.

Nola Nora - Gutwrench.

Biker Babs - Skybound Press.

Unsinkable Undina - Slow Industries.

You can see all of the cards here.

Sub-Studio 2010 Pocket Calendar

We're excited to have designed our first-ever calendar! Our 2010 pocket calendar takes traditional fortune cookie proverbs and updates them with a modern design. There are 24 different proverbs (okay, some of them are more like random sayings) to help guide you through the next year:
Don't panic.
Wherever you go, go with all your heart.
The smallest deed is better than the biggest intention.
Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without.
The only reason you die is because you live.
Take the chance while you still have the choice.
The only thing you truly own is your time.
Be brave enough to live creatively.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Impossible is a word only to be found in the dictionary of fools.
Keep true to the dreams of your youth.
The beginning of wisdom is to desire it.
Always begin with an end in mind.
The eyes believe themselves; the ears believe other people.
Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so shall you become.
Pick a path with heart.
Take a chance in the near future.
Change your luck today.
Rest is a good thing, but boredom is its brother.
Let the spirit of adventure set the tone.
Dare to dream, hope, believe, seek, feel, find, and love.
Be mischievous and you will not be lonesome.
Originality overcomes everything.
Good luck is the result of good planning.

If you're feeling lucky, let us pick one out of a hat for you, and see what arrives in the mail. Or, if you want to make your own luck, you can choose your own proverb. We recommend the hat, it's a lucky hat.

Each calendar is 2.25" wide and 3.75" tall, and will fit inside your wallet, moleskine, purse or pocket - making it easy to carry around for whenever you need it. The calendars have been laminated for durability. Only $4 when we choose for you, $5 when you choose your own.

The Working Proof

Sean and I are super excited to announce the launch of a project we have been working long and hard on - The Working Proof! The Working Proof is an online print gallery and shop with the mission of promoting both art and social responsibility through a series of limited-edition prints. Prints are affordable (always under $100), and each print is paired by the artist with a charity to which we will donate 15% of each sale - creating what we believe to be a product with not just aesthetic, but social value.

Prints are produced by the artist, rather than by us, giving the artist complete creative control, and allowing for a wide variety of print mediums (upcoming: screenprint, letterpress, linocut, and giclee, to name a few!). Each print is signed and numbered in a limited-edition print run that is exclusive to the Working Proof. Besides showcasing emerging artists and great artwork, the intent of the Working Proof is to promote a variety of charities and to expose them to new supporters through the appreciation of art and creativity. The Working Proof is made possible by a grant from Redeemer Presbyterian Church and their Center for Faith and Work. We are very grateful for their financial and professional support.

A new print is released once a week, on Tuesdays at 1:30 pm, EST. To receive advance notice of our weekly print release, sign up for our newsletter.

We have some great artists lined up over the next few weeks, including Yasmine Surovec, Julianna Swaney, Heather Smith Jones, Dan Funderburgh, Gretchen Wagoner, Ben Javens, and Catherine Ryan. Our first up - Samantha Hahn!

Burden, by Samantha Hahn.
15% of the gross sale of this print goes to the Kids In Need Foundation, whose mission is to ensure that every child is prepared to learn and succeed by providing free school supplies nationally to students most in need.

Burden was originally drawn in concentrated inks on thin, colored watercolor paper. The print features a woman bearing a heavy load, represented by chairs chained to her back. Chairs are really meant for resting in, yet she carries them — indicating a juxtaposition of roles. Sometimes it seems that we create our own burdens in life.

Samantha Hahn is an illustrator, surface pattern designer, crafter, blogger, and art teacher. Her studio is in Brooklyn where she lives with her husband and dog. She and her husband, Dave, are expecting their first child, Henry, any day now. Samantha earned her BFA in Illustration from Syracuse University and an MA in Art Education from Columbia University.

Thank You, Erin!

Hey guys! We're not actually back in New York quite yet (we'll be back late on Wednesday), but we'll be posting through this week regardless. I hope you enjoyed Erin's posts as much as I did - I've loved her round-ups and you know we love color coding things (remember our gift guides from this last year?)...So, huge thanks to Erin of Design for Mankind for enabling us have a great time on vacation and for being such a great guest blogger! If you don't already read DFM - I highly recommend putting it on your daily list!

We've been having a great time here in Seattle - my brother got married in the same place that Sean and I did two years ago, and then we went on a three day hike up in the Cascades with my family (ranging in age from 7 to 80!)...Since then, we've been wandering around Seattle and enjoying the beautiful weather! It's been a great way to bring the summer to a close (is it really almost September?)...Hope you all have had a great summer, too! See you on Monday...Here are a few photos from our hike...Enjoy!

Guest Blogger - Erin Loechner of Design for Mankind

Hey all! Sean and I are in Seattle for my little brother's wedding, and rather than abandoning our blog like we normally do when we're on vacation, we asked one of our favorite bloggers, Erin Loechner, to guest-post for the week. Erin is the editor of the very awesome Design for Mankind blog, and we're pretty sure that she has superhuman powers (or at least that she doesn't ever sleep), because in addition to Design for Mankind, she publishes Mankind Magazine, contributes to Shelter Pop and Share Some Candy, and produces a video series promoting conversation between artists and designers called Dialogue (it's an awesome series, if you haven't already checked it out). So, huge thanks to Erin for guest blogging here at Sub-Studio! I can't wait to see what she comes up with for you over the next week. Enjoy, and we'll be back soon!
